About

OUR VISION

Seed and Food Relief Inc. (SAFR) is a national non-profit, tax exempt organization who is committed to Investing in America by providing short and long term solutions to hunger in America, especially among SNAP and low income households.  As an agro-ecology non-profit organization, we are committed to working with individuals, families, communities, and institutions in solving food insecurity and food inequity through the introduction of ecologically friendly grow techniques of hydroponics, aquaponics, and vertical farming.

Hunger continues to be a stubborn, chronic problem in America.  According to US Hunger Stats 2020, www.usafacts.org, 11.4% or 33.98 million people are in poverty. 38.29 million people, including 12 million children, are in food-insecure households.

SAFR provides program participants with the tools needed to grow nutritious, fresh, organic fruits and vegetables in their homes - whether it’s on balconies, backyards, or community areas.  All supplies and equipment are available at no cost.

These statistics seem to increase in the wrong direction every year.  We know that just handing out a sandwich or canned goods is taking care of only today.  But what about tomorrow?  It’s evident that we must give people the fishing rod, in addition to the fish, in order for the person to be self-sufficient.  So, we give people the fishing rod - the means to grow in their own homes. Thus, in addition the SNAP benefits and food bank supplements,  LET’S GROW affords the individual with the opportunity to have readily available nutritious foods of fruits and vegetables growing in their own homes.

PROGRAMS

I. LET’S GROW

Seed and Food Relief Inc. is so pleased to introduce its residential program, “LET’S GROW”.  SNAP recipients and low income households are eligible for this residential grow program.  The goal is to encourage all households, from individuals to large families, to supplement their food access by growing fruits and vegetables in their own homes, on  balconies or backyard.  Program participants are provided with the training, tools and resources needed to be successful.

Program sessions include orientation, training, weekly mentoring, annual follow-up for 2 years, information on storage & preservation through canning, recipes, etc.  Seeds, equipment and supplies are provided at no cost.  Program participants will be introduced to agro-ecology, climate friendly growth techniques such as aquaponics and vertical farming in order to minimize any harmful effects to the environment.  Automated and non-automated grow options are available.

II. COME GROW WITH US

COME GROW WITH US is SAFR’s program geared toward communities, HOAs, education and business institutions.  It is our belief that focus on growing fresh fruits and vegetables should expand beyond the individual households to the communities where we work and play.  We work with communities and institutions in turning part of their area into grow gardens. A partnership is formed with communities and institutions in developing projects specific to their needs and area of space.  Ecological growing techniques of aquaponics and vertical farming are introduced along with other ecology friendly growing mediums such as coco coir..  As with our residential sustainable grow program, LET’S GROW, all seeds, supplies and equipment will be provided by SAFR at no cost to program participants.
